Parents Involved in Education
PIE was designed with collaboration at the heart of the effort. 15 years ago several organizations were trying to offer parent-learning sessions. We noticed that many session topics were duplicated, which made parents unsure about which ones to attend. Thus, PIE founders decided to work together on one program instead of individual ones. PIE removes barriers to participation by offering free dinner and childcare to families. And since COVID, a virtual option and recordings for the sessions are now available.
For equity reasons, we decided to hold our classes in Spanish-first. There were plenty of resources and info in English at the time, but not many that were offered in Spanish. We saw a gap for Spanish-speaking SVVSD families and aimed to help close it through PIE.
Funding: SVVSD contributes financially and in-kind through space, staff, and interpretation. All of our agency partners contribute financially or in-kind to support the expenses of the PIE. Regular expenses include dinner, childcare, interpretation, incentives, and marketing.
